Artificial Intelligence: China or the United States? – Kai-Fu Lee

Kai-Fu Lee has written an essay on Artificial Intelligence.

Which country dominates artificial intelligence research?

Kai-Fu Lee knows what he is talking about, since he wrote a thesis on artificial intelligence (language recognition), and was successively at Apple, SGI, Microsoft, and Google.

His book, dated 2018, is to be obtained very quickly, as it is so interesting:

AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order

But it is also open to criticism. According to The Economist, Kai-Fu Lee relies on a very short history of 30 years of capitalism in China; moreover, he seems to underestimate the problem of government control that curbs private freedoms.

China had its Sputnik moment on May 27, 2017, when Alphago (Google) dethroned Ke Jie, the world’s best Go player. American companies were inflicting a blow to China.

In the race between the United States and China to dominate artificial intelligence, Kai-Fu Lee believes that China will win. He bases this on four criteria: brains, capital, regulation, and data. Kai-Fu Lee believes that China will win on these four criteria.

According to Kai-Fu Lee, “If data is the new oil, then China is the new Saudi Arabia”.
