Iran-US relations during the Islamic revolution

The Islamic revolution in 1979 dispossessed the Shah of his powers. These powers then reverted to the Ayatollah Khomeini.

Slogans were chanted against the United States such as “Death to America, the Great Satan”.

Hostage taking

In November of the same year, 53 diplomats in the American embassy in Tehran were taken hostage by students claiming to be followers of Ayatollah Khomeini.

An Iranian plane shot down by the United States

Two hundred and ninety civilians died when a US cruiser destroyed an Iranian plane in mid-air. Many of them were on their way to Mecca.

The guilt, initially rejected by the United States, was recognized in 1996.

The anti-American remarks of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

These remarks multiplied during the terms of office of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad between 2005 and 2013. While he no longer wants Israel, he states: “American domination of the world will come to an end.”

Five months later, an international agreement on the Iranian nuclear program is signed (November 24, 2013).

Japanese oil tanker attack and American drone shot down (2019)

The attack on the Japanese oil tanker was not claimed. However, Donald Trump, president of the United States, blames Iran.

On June 20, 2019, Iran claims to have destroyed a US drone that they believe was in Iranian airspace (it was actually out of Iranian airspace, according to the United States).

Donald Trump then allegedly ordered strikes on Iran but canceled them only 10 minutes before the operation.
